Match Preview

Chelsea will be looking to make progress in this competition when they face a tough Leeds United side, with the cup likely to become an increasing focus for Xabi Alonso. Reaching the latter stages will be the aim for the head coach as no Europe this season.

The players will also be keen to put last weekend’s defeat to Arsenal behind them as quickly as possible, with a strong cup performance offering the perfect opportunity to get back on track and build some momentum.

Stamford Bridge could be rocking as the competition heats up, with the European contingent entering the competition at this stage. Chelsea will be hoping to navigate their way through and with the final in sight for the club.

Chelsea team news

Moises Caicedo remains out but could be in contention for the weekend, while Marco Palestra, Emmanuel Emegha and Jordan Henderson are all expected to be sidelined for an undetermined period. The main boost is the potential return of Levi Colwill, who could come back into central defence after missing the Arsenal defeat through a fitness concern.

Changes are also expected in attack, with Estevao and Danny Welbeck both likely to be handed starts. Josh Acheampong could retain his place in the backline, while the more natural wide options of Malo Gusto and Pep Chavarria may come into the side.

Competition for places is strong across the pitch, but it will be interesting to see whether Mike Penders is given the opportunity to replace Emi Martinez in goal.

Predicted Lineup (3-4-2-1): Penders; Acheampong, Fofana, Colwill; Gusto, Lavia, Barco, Chavarria; Estevao, Rogers; Welbeck.

Leeds United team news

Leeds will be without the injured Joe Rodon, while there is a ‘little question mark’ over the availability of Dan James. There could also be some rotation to the line-up given the quick turnaround from last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Brighton.

Manager Daniel Farke has urged patience over expectations surrounding Harry Wilson, with the star signing needing time to settle into his new surroundings. He is expected to feature in the game.

Farke is expected to rotate his side, meaning debuts could be in store for Jean-Matteo Bahoya and Melvin Bard, who both joined on deadline day. Michael Zetterer could also potentially make his bow.
