It is safe to say that Chelsea need to improve in a number of areas if they are to get back to challenging at the Premier League and Champions League levels, like they used to in the past, but have not been able to since the change of ownership. Liam Rosenior is the man who has been selected by the club to take over from Enzo Maresca, and hopefully, take the Blues to the next level.

Of course, if Rosenior is to be a success at Chelsea, the club will need to back him in the transfer market. Far too often, under this new ownership and sporting directors, they have brought in mediocre players, who have failed to have the desired impact despite costing significant fees.

As a result, Chelsea have found themselves stuck in one place, or even taken a step backwards, like they have this season. Is Jamie Gittens better than Noni Madueke? Does Liam Delap have a higher ceiling than Nicolas Jackson?

At the end of the day, a manager is only as good as his players. So, unless Chelsea bring in genuine quality, Rosenior can only take the team so far, no matter how good a manager he proves to be.

As reported by Fichajes, Rosenior has identified the goalkeeping position as the weakest link in his current system. The Chelsea board, driven by the manager's tactical vision, has set its sights on Mike Maignan's contract situation in Italy.

Now, one has to question whether the report is accurate or not. Rosenior sounded pretty positive about his options in goal during his recent interview. He said:

"I'm very fortunate, in terms of the goalkeepers, that both [Filip] Jorgensen and [Rob] Sanchez are world-class goalkeepers with their feet, which absolutely suits the way I want to play.

‘But I'm not going to come in here on the first day and they can say to Rob to play from the halfway line, or for Filip to play from the halfway. It takes time; it's a process. I feel very confident I can bring the best out of my group, in different areas, in different aspects, and playing in one way with one team is different to playing another way with another. I can be adaptable but it's about my players and their strengths."

At the same time, one cannot overlook the work that he has already done at Strasbourg with Mike Penders. Many view the Belgian as the long-term number one for Chelsea.

Last summer, Chelsea had tried to sign Maignan before the Club World Cup. Since then, the rumours have refused to go away. But the situation is a bit different now. Sanchez has been one of the club's best performers this season. Penders is one to watch out for in the future as well. Interestingly, Jorgensen is believed to be looking to leave, so, you never know how things will play out over the coming weeks and months.
