Chelsea superstar Cole Palmer is actually very effective versus the traditional Premier League big six clubs. That's if we judge by the only really full set of objective metrics. The former Manchester City starlet has played just one English top-flight season in it's entirety, and we can measure him accurately by assessing that available data. We can also then make predictions, after a slow start against the EPL's eminent sides, for the current campaign. Don't forget, the young but extremely gifted playmaker can combine scoring and assisting like it's absolute child's play.
And Palmer's incredible output can transpire in the biggest games and on the most illustrious of stages. We've witnessed this whilst he was with two different domestic outfits. And we have seen the 22-year-old become integral to the England National Team. That was after an assist in the Netherlands Euro 2024 Semifinal. Not to mention Palmer's glorious goal in the Three Lions' unlucky loss to Spain in the same tournament's Final. Football fans should remember with respect to finishing and facilitating in the 2023/24 PL, he outscored Mohamed Salah, Bukayo Saka, Son Heung-min and further preeminent talent.
Is the big six realigning?
Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur make up the elite group. Or do they? I deliberately placed Man United and Tottenham at the end of that collective. The two are huge clubs with undoubtedly massive fan bases. Yet it appears that they've both respectively regressed and lost ground to their rivals.
Naturally Chelsea Football Club was in the same boat until lately. The installation of Enzo Maresca seems to be an astute decision, even in this early phase. The west London side are clearly at a vital and positive juncture of development.
The Blues are arguably a force once more. And CFC have the most exciting emerging talent in England football at their disposal, and to their great strength. I will now explain and forecast Palmer's influence further with statistical help.
Chelsea's Cole Palmer beat outstanding footballers last season in his initial time as a Premier League starter
At this early point in 2024/25, Palmer has failed to register a goal or an assist in matches against any of the leagues leading teams. This would be more concerning if his stats from last year wasn't so encouraging and enlightening.
We've also seen staggering feats of brilliance such as his four-goal haul in one half vs Brighton & Hove Albion this season. But last term he bagged more goal involvements (8) in the most crucial fixtures than Salah, Saka and other stars as you can read here. Only Erling Haaland (11, including eight goals) and Anthony Gordon (11, with four assists) enjoyed more telling moments against the PL's big six.
