England has delivered some lethargic performances at the World Cup this summer. This has led to Cole Palmer sending an indirect message to the Three Lions' manager, Thomas Tuchel.
Palmer was quoted in The Times, "I know what I could have offered, you know - something different to what the manager has picked. But like I said before, I can’t change the decision and I wish everyone all the best."
The Chelsea player just had a mixed campaign. However, he still managed 11 goals, albeit with just three assists in 34 games in all competitions. The Blues overall had a bad season, in which they finished 10th in the Premier League.
Things looked rosy for Chelsea after they won the Club World Cup in the United States last summer. They defeated Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final, with Palmer scoring twice and making one assist.
This was not the first time that Palmer had scored in a major final. He scored England's goal in their defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. However, this was his last goal involvement for the Three Lions. Since then, he has only represented the Three Lions five times, missing a lot of games due to injury.
Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers were picked instead of Cole Palmer
England has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to the attacking midfield options. Phil Foden of Manchester City missed out on a place too. Tuchel went with Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers.
Bellingham is a global star for his performances for England and Real Madrid. Last season was not his best for Los Blancos; he scored just eight goals with five assists in 40 games in all competitions. Real Madrid also ended the campaign without winning a trophy.
The Real Madrid player is Tuchel's starter in attacking midfield, and he has scored twice and made one assist in four games at the tournament so far. During Euro 2024, he rescued England with a late equalizer against Slovakia. The Three Lions may need more moments like this from him as they take on Mexico at the Azteca in the round of 16.
Rogers is valued by Aston Villa at £130 million, which could price out even the likes of Arsenal from signing him this summer. He scored 14 goals with 12 assists in 55 games for Villa last season, helping them win the Europa League. However, he is yet to score in three World Cup matches so far.
When England are not performing, fans will often look to players who are not there who could make a difference. Often, a player's stock is never higher than when they are absent. Palmer would be frustrated at not being involved, but he has this summer to rest and be ready for Chelsea in the upcoming campaign.
