With barely a week left in the January transfer window, Chelsea have not done enough to back Liam Rosenior. To be fair, they are pulling off results at the moment but the performances have been far from great. In fact, defence continues to be their weakest point. Even in the 3-1 win over Crystal Palace, they gave away far too many chances.

The need for another centre-back has been clear since the summer. Enzo Maresca had asked for one following the injury to Levi Colwill, but those requests were overlooked. Chelsea have paid the price for that decision.

The likes of Benoit Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo clearly are not reliable enough to be starting on a consistent basis. On the other hand, there has not been enough progress when it comes to a move for Jeremy Jacquet of Rennes.

And Chelsea's latest move might be a hint that they have already given up on the Jacquet chase this month. That is because they have brought in, or rather brought back, another centre-back.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, there is more business to do for Chelsea in the upcoming days after activating the recall clause for Aaron Anselmino. They wanted him as part of the squad after his excellent impact at Borussia Dortmund. It is a done deal. The Blues are still involved in the race for Jacquet to be signed now but for the summer, Liverpool and Bayern Munich are also in the battle.

Anselmino has managed to impress on loan at Borussia Dortmund. And that has earned him a move back to Chelsea.

Now, it remains to be seen whether he will get consistent chances at Stamford Bridge or not. One would imagine that he would have been given some assurances over his game time.

It is more than likely that this is also a sign that the Jacquet deal is proving to be tricky for Chelsea. So, they are bringing in a backup option.
