This new year has started off in turbulent fashion for both Chelsea and Manchester United. On one hand, Enzo Maresca was suddenly sacked on January 1 by the club despite them sitting in fifth position in the Premier League table and holding a decent enough place in the Champions League standings as well.
On the other hand, Ruben Amorim has also been dismissed by Manchester United after the club’s recent struggles against relegation contenders Wolves and Leeds United. So, both clubs are now searching for managers to lead their respective teams forward.
Chelsea are already close to chalking out the fine details with Liam Rosenior, who is expected to be appointed as the next Blues manager soon. However, the same cannot be said about Manchester United, who have just begun looking for a replacement for Amorim. Or could there already be an individual on their mind that resulted in the Portuguese tactician’s sacking just now?
The timing of Manchester United’s decision to part ways with their manager just as Maresca is without a club is something that raises the obvious question. Will we see the Italian in the Old Trafford hot seat next?
Did Manchester United sack Ruben Amorim to bring in Chelsea fan favourite Enzo Maresca?
Honestly speaking, Amorim had not been able to restore Manchester United to its lost glory, or even come close. However, the club were just starting to get a bit better in recent times, with them even climbing up to sixth in the Premier League table.
As a result, there might be a possibility that Manchester United’s management viewed Maresca as a possible upgrade over Amorim and decided to pull the plug on the Portuguese manager's stint to bring the ex-Chelsea boss in. After all, the Italian did win the Conference League and the Club World Cup in his one and a half year tenure at Stamford Bridge while also finishing fourth with an inexperienced and injury-riddled squad.
That said, there still haven’t been any concrete reports linking the two together as we speak. But then again, in modern football, nothing can be ruled out completely. So let’s wait and keep an eye on how this situation unfolds.
