Tino Livramento has just had to pull out of England's World Cup roster due to injury. The Three Lions manager, Thomas Tuchel, still decided to overlook Trent Alexander-Arnold and take Trevoh Chalobah instead.
Tuchel values team unity rather than individuals. He is not afraid to leave out big-name players if they do not fit into his system. Whilst at Chelsea, he left out the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Christian Pulisic for big games.
The German's philosophy paid off at Chelsea as he won the Champions League, Super Cup, and Club World Cup. Winning European soccer's premier competition was a key factor in why he was appointed England manager.
He has won two Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain and the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich. However, both these clubs are expected to win their domestic divisions. Tournament soccer is what Tuchel is considered an expert in.
Tuchel also took PSG to the Champions League final, where they lost to Bayern. With the French side, he also won the Coupe de France, Coupe de la Ligue, and the Trophée des Champions. Whilst with Borussia Dortmund, he claimed the DFB-Pokal.
Can Thomas Tuchel lead England to World Cup glory?
The manager has shown the same single-minded winning mentality with England as he did with Chelsea. Not just by overlooking Alexander-Arnold, Tuchel also left out Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, and Harry Maguire.
He may be stubborn when it comes to squad selection. However, Tuchel can be flexible tactically. With Chelsea, he often used a 3-4-2-1 formation, but could change to a back four. Now with England, he is using a 4-2-3-1 system.
England have not won a major tournament since the 1966 World Cup. They came agonizingly close under Gareth Southgate, who took them to two European Championship finals. Southgate did a lot of great work with England, but Tuchel has been brought in to get them over the line.
It was thought that Tuchel would just have the target of winning the World Cup. However, he has now committed to the Three Lions until 2028, where he will guide England at the Euros. That will be another good chance for England to win as they are co-hosting the tournament along with Wales, Scotland, and the Republic of Ireland.
With international soccer, you do not have as much time to work with your team as you do at the club level. However, Tuchel is clearly enjoying his role with England, and we will see if he can win the World Cup this summer.
