Chelsea fans had been hoping that the Blues would use the game against Lincoln City to bounce back and regain some form. Instead, what we got was another disappointing performance. And although Enzo Maresca's side were able to win on the night, it raised more questions than provide answers.
Chelsea actually trailed at half-time against the League One side. They did score two quick goals after the break but failed to build on that to make it a one-sided contest. Lincoln City were always in the match and could have made it 2-2 if they had taken their chances.
After a performance like this, it is hard to find any positives. But it does look like Maresca was impressed with Facundo Buonanotte's display, with the Argentine scoring the winner on the night, after a thunderous strike from Tyrique George had restored parity just minutes earlier.
As reported by Football London, when asked about Buonanotte's display, Maresca said after the match:
"Yeah, Buonanotte was very good. I think first-half, we all struggled a little bit, second-half I think we were much, much better."
Enzo Maresca praises only one player after Chelsea's win vs Lincoln
Chelsea do need Buonanotte to be very good moving forward. That is because Cole Palmer is believed to have aggravated his groin injury and is expected to be out for at least three more weeks, if reports in the media are accurate. But that could be much longer.
As a result, Buonanotte is the one expected to take Palmer's position on the pitch. And it goes without saying that those are big shoes to fill.
Buonanotte is only on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion for the season but has suddenly become a key player for Chelsea. One who the Blues need to succeed if they are to bring their season back on track.
To be fair, Buonanotte has shown flashes of quality in the brief time that he has played for Chelsea. Now, it is about taking things to the next level.
