Chelsea look set to make one of the summer transfer window's most confusing moves, as they are believed to be closing in on the signing of Facundo Buonanotte from Brighton & Hove Albion. The Blues have missed out on Xavi Simons. Surely they do not think that the Argentine is a type of alternative they should be aiming for. He struggled to hold down a starting spot in a Leicester City team that got relegated last season.
Then again, what if Chelsea are trying to make not two, but three signings before the transfer window closes? Alejandro Garnacho is one. Buonanotte could be the second. And how about bringing in a centre-back, something that Enzo Maresca has clearly been keen on following Levi Colwill's injury.
It does look like Chelsea have their sights on a Juventus centre-back, if reports coming out of Italy are accurate. Signing him this late in the window won't be simple though.
As reported by Juvefc.com, Arsenal and Chelsea have both attempted to open talks with Juventus for Federico Gatti. Maresca would like to bring in his Italian compatriot to Stamford Bridge. But the Italian club do not seem open to the idea of the centre-back leaving, as he’s considered a key member in Igor Tudor’s plans.
Enzo Maresca wants Chelsea to sign Juventus centre-back
Gatti has one of the most fascinating journeys in modern football. He started playing in the amateur leagues in Italy and had a day job as a bricklayer.
From there, he has steadily climbed up the ranks, playing all across the sixth to second division of Italian football, before finally ending up at Juventus. Now, at 27 years of age, he is a starter for the club. He has also represented Italy on six occasions. That is an inspirational journey, no matter which club you support.
Chelsea could not only do with a centre-back of his quality but a character like that in the dressing room as well. He would be a shrewd addition for the Blues but as things stand, it seems unlikely to happen this summer, with merely days left in the window.
