There was one Chelsea player who could have headed straight down the Anfield tunnel after the defeat without a single fan complaining. But he chose not to.

Estevao didn't play a minute in Chelsea’s Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool, but that didn't stop him from heading over to the travelling supporters at full-time to hand one of them his shirt. After a disappointing penalty shootout defeat, he had every reason to be frustrated, yet he still made time for the fans.

The Brazilian wonderkid has not only endeared himself to Chelsea supporters but also seems to have won over football fans around the world. His smile has a habit of appearing on the darkest of occasions, bringing some joy to the stadium even when he is watching from the bench. I promise I’m not falling in love with the kid!

The gesture carries even more meaning when you consider the season he is having. Estevao has played just 172 minutes so far, a remarkably small return for a player Chelsea fans regard as one of the most exciting talents at the club.

For a teenager who has already shown glimpses of what he can do, spending so much time on the sidelines cannot be easy. His frustration is understandable, but his willingness to connect with the supporters says plenty about his character.

That is why the moment stood out. Plenty of players in his position would have left the pitch quickly and kept their disappointment private. Estevao chose to acknowledge the supporters who travelled to Anfield, on a night when the result gave them little to celebrate. It shows maturity beyond his years, and it shows he understands what the club means to its fans.

Supporters responded in kind. The reaction to the shirt gesture was warm and immediate, and it added to his standing as a favourite in the stands. Fans value players who care, and a young forward who stays gracious while he waits for minutes earns respect that goalscoring alone does not.

Whatever Estevao has been promised in terms of first-team minutes, one thing is certain: he will always have the love and support of the fans.
