Reece James has been on quite the journey in a Chelsea shirt, from lifting major trophies to taking on the captaincy and battling back from multiple injuries.
From coming through the youth ranks at Cobham to becoming captain of the club, James has always bled royal blue, and now, there could be another chapter to his Chelsea story. Everybody knows where Reece James’ future lies at Chelsea, and it could be in the middle of the pitch.
The Chelsea captain has spent much of his career operating at right-back or wing-back, but his qualities could make him an excellent option in central midfield. Now, the question asked is why England’s arguably best right-back is playing as a midfielder, largely operating as a deep lying playmaker.
Midfield ability
James’ technical ability, composure on the ball and passing range are already at a level where he can compete with some of the best midfielders in the Chelsea ranks, maybe even across the Premier League midfielders. This was evidenced by his switching the play in the Arsenal game as his passing cross pitch regularly found the outlet in Pedro Neto.
James has the ability to dictate play from deeper positions, switch the ball across the pitch and break lines with his passing. Rather than simply being another defensive midfielder, he could offer Chelsea a more progressive option who can control the tempo and contribute to attacks from deeper areas.
There are, however, areas of his game that would need to improve. Playing in central midfield requires far greater intensity without the ball, particularly when pressing opponents and winning possession back quickly.
Put him alongside Moises Caicedo in his ability to cover the runs and press the attack then Chelsea could have their future midfield pairing sorted.
Chelsea already know what James can offer from the right side, but moving him into midfield could unlock another level to his game. With the right coaching and consistency, there is a strong argument that his future should be in the centre of the pitch rather than on the touchline.
Alonso's formation leads to the change
While the full back role is evolving, the wing back role is not a position that I feel suits the Englishman as he lacks the burst of pace that Pedro Neto has. This role in midfield, on the right side, will allow him to cover for the wing back when the wing back runs forward.
In this Xabi Alonso formation, James can act as a cover from a more advanced position, allowing a greater balance than we have seen in the Premier League so far this season.
