On the last day of the Premier League season, Chelsea finally guaranteed their spot in the Champions League for the next season. The Blues needed to win this game to ensure it, and they did it with a 1-0 away victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. It was Levi Colwill who scored the winning goal for Enzo Maresca's side.
The Blues' players, staff, and supporters' celebrations last evening were justified, given that they failed to qualify for the Champions League the last two seasons. And shortly after that, Fabrizio Romano gave Chelsea supporters some more excellent news.
Romano confirmed that Chelsea will advance in talks to extend Moises Caicedo’s contract in the next months. The plan since March is to open negotiations over a new deal for the midfielder
Caicedo has had an excellent campaign and has established himself as an essential member of Maresca's Chelsea this season. Winning the club's Player of the Season and Players' Player of the Season title just shows his importance to this team.
Fabrizio Romano confirms Chelsea will advance in talks with Moises Caicedo
It was well deserved, even though other Chelsea players have had their moments. Caicedo is the only one who has been consistently outstanding the entire season.
Romeo Lavia's constant injury problems had made the Blues quite vulnerable in midfield, putting a lot of pressure on Caicedo. However, the Ecuadorian midfielder appeared to take it in stride, playing every week in such a demanding position, and he remained remarkably consistent throughout.
So, handing him an extension feels like a bit of a no-brainer. A lot was made of the transfer fee that the Blues paid Brighton & Hove Albion to sign him. But suddenly, nobody seems to be talking about that any more, as the Ecuadorian has proven his worth through his performances.
