Chelsea have been quiet in recent weeks in terms of signings, instead focusing on finding new homes, both temporary and permanent, for those currently at Stamford Bridge. But now, it looks like things are picking up pace once again in terms of making additions to Enzo Maresca's squad. Deals for Xavi Simons and Jorrel Hato are advancing. And it looks like one has been agreed for a Crystal Palace winger.
While the Blues want to add to their first-team this summer, they also always have their eye out for rising talents from around the world. This time, they have found one very close to home.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Jesse Derry from Crystal Palace ahead of eight European clubs, who also wanted the winger. Medical will take place on Friday as the 18-year-old looked set for a move to Germany before the Blues made the move.
Interestingly, The Chelsea Spot had reported a couple of days back that it was Bayern Munich that Derry was set to join before the Blues swooped in. That happened late last week.
Fabrizio Romano confirms Chelsea have agreed deal for Crystal Palace winger
Derry is one of the most highly rated talents in English football right now, which is clear from the level of the clubs that wanted to sign him. He has been compared to Jack Grealish. So, Chelsea have pulled off a major coup here for sure.
He has a phenomenal record at the youth level for both club and country. Of course, that does not always equal success at the next level.
Now, it remains to be seen how his development goes. It has been suggested that he is too good for the U21 level and could be sent out on loan to play senior football immediately.
