Fabrizio Romano has issued a major Chelsea update this morning, claiming their intent to enter talks with Moises Caicedo over a new deal.
Enzo Maresca is at the wheel for Chelsea and after securing his first European trophy in his debut season, the Italian will be excited to host the Blues' return to the Champions League next time out.
Chelsea has experienced the managerial merry-go-round in the last few seasons and while some of the hierarchy's decision-making has been questioned, the London side seems to be settled with a good manager at the helm finally. Now, he can push the board to grant his own wishes.
It has often been touted that Maresca inherited a billion-dollar squad without direction. However, he's come in and given direction to those expensive players. Now, the trajectory is in his hands.
Fabrizio Romano tips Chelsea to enter talks with Moises Caicedo
According to a report from Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea is working behind the scenes on a new deal for Moises Caicedo, who signed from Brighton for £115m. The aim is to tie the Ecuadorian midfielder down to a longer deal.
Caicedo's current deal runs out in 2031, so, yeah I know. It seems a bit like overkill to focus a lot of time and attention on a new deal, but Caicedo is worth his weight in gold. He's been one of the standout players for the Blues this season and the performance in the Conference League final was just the icing on the cake.
This is simply the nature of soccer right now. In the past, a contract which runs for another six years was frankly unheard of. However, clubs are much more protective of their star players these days. Chelsea more than any other team.
It remains to be seen how long Caicedo will extend his contract for. From Chelsea's perspective, this is probably to boost morale and reward Caicedo for his hard work, so the salary might be the main talking point.
Overall, this is good news for Chelsea.
