With just a few days left in the January transfer window, things are not ideal for Chelsea. They still have not been able to find a breakthrough in their quest to sign Jeremy Jacquet. While personal terms have been agreed with the defender, an agreement with Rennes has proven to be far more difficult to find.

Chelsea do need to strengthen their defence though. And Aaron Anselmino has been recalled from Borussia Dortmund, where he was enjoying a solid loan spell. The Argentine's situation at Stamford Bridge seems like a bit of a mess though.

There is no clarity on where he will continue at Chelsea or be sent out on loan again. If it is the latter, then the decision to recall him has to go down as a terrible one. Surely getting regular chances at Borussia Dortmund would have helped a lot more in his development than whatever he could do at Strasbourg, with all due respect to the BlueCo's French club.

Another option seems to be open though. And that is to bring back Mamadou Sarr from his loan spell at Strasbourg, after his AFCON-winning heroics with Senegal.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are internally assessing all options for centre-back, with Sarr being recalled among the possibilities. But only if a good solution can be found for Anselmino, who is waiting to understand the situation.

This has been one of Chelsea's biggest problems. The never-ending desire to sign the best youngsters in the world. In that quest, those they have already brought in end up getting lost in the shuffle.

Anselmino was doing brilliantly at Borussia Dortmund. If he were not already a Chelsea player, one would imagine that the Blues would be all over him. But now, he feels like an afterthought behind Jacquet and Sarr.
