It is very clear that Chelsea now recognise the need to strengthen their centre-back ranks. Levi Colwill picked up an ACL injury in the summer and is not expected to be back anytime soon, if at all this season. In his absence, the Blues have been shaky at the back. The likes of Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo have not been able to fill his void. To be fair to Josh Acheampong, he has not been handed enough chances to do so.
All things considered, Chelsea do need a quality centre-back option. Someone like Marc Guehi, at a bargain transfer fee as well, would have been perfect.
But it looks like even 25 is too old for the profile of players Chelsea want to sign. Instead, they are once again looking towards a highly talented, but unproven, option in the form of Jeremey Jacquet of Rennes.
It is believed that Chelsea have already agreed personal terms with Jacquet, who is keen on the move. And since then, Fabrizio Romano has dropped another update on the situation.
Fabrizio Romano drops late-night Jeremy Jacquet to Chelsea news
While speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano confirmed that it is not an easy negotiation between Chelsea and Rennes for Jacquet. The French club want really important money as they believe he’s one of the best young defenders in the world, more than the €64m they got for Jeremy Doku's move to Manchester City. Liam Rosenior has approved the target
It is also worth mentioning that Jacquet is not the only one on Chelsea's shortlist. There are two others, although the Frenchman is the top option.
You never know with Chelsea these days though. If they fail to get a deal done, it might not be long before a briefing is made to the media that the club are satisfied with the centre-back options they already have.
