4. The Goalkeeping Dilemma – No Room for Sentiment
Filip Jörgensen was Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper in the Conference League earlier in the season. Despite Robert Sánchez’s poor performances, he was still preferred in the premier league. However, Jörgensen is now Chelsea’s clear first-choice goalkeeper, with Sánchez dropped due to his struggles.
This does not mean Sánchez should be reintroduced as the Conference League goalkeeper. It is vital that Enzo Maresca stands firm and makes it clear that poor performances have consequences. The UEFA Conference League is Chelsea’s best chance at silverware, and that should not be sacrificed to give Sánchez game time. Goalkeeping is not a position that requires rotation for fitness reasons, and Jörgensen is perfectly capable of playing every match from now until the end of the season.
