Christopher Nkunku may be best suited as a flat track bully
Christopher Nkunku was one of the stars of the night as he opened the scoring with a brave header in the 24th minute. He also recorded an assist to bust the game wide open 12 minutes later and the Blues began to run riot from that point on.
Nkunku is now joint top scorer for the Blues this season with 14, tying him at the top of the standings with Cole Palmer. However most of these goals have come against lower level competition like Servette in the UEFA Conference League and a hat trick against League Two side Barrow in the EFL Cup.
Against top sides or even upper tier sides that he has featured against, Nkunku has struggled when played as a striker which is not his natural position. He has been excellent against lower level competition which is perfect for the Blues as they romped through the UECL group stage.
However he has not shown any reason to dethrone Nicolas Jackson as the team’s lead striker and the Senegal international should reclaim his spot as soon as he is healthy. This is not to say that Nkunku won’t have a role in the team moving forward as an attacking midfielder but he is not good enough at the moment to lead the line against serious competition.
