It would be safe to say that most Chelsea fans have been left frustrated by the club's transfer strategy under the new ownership. The model put in place does not seem the best, or even a guaranteed, route to success. And considering how things have played out so far, the Blues might be set to miss out on a Champions League spot once again.
Despite this, the Chelsea owners and sporting directors are showing no signs of adjusting their transfer strategy. Once again, they are being linked with a big-money move for an unproven youngster. This time around, it is Jeremy Jacquet of Rennes.
Chelsea might need to shell out around €65 million to sign Jacquet from Rennes. On the other hand, Marc Guehi, a proven Premier League centre-back and a regular England international, has joined Manchester City for around £20 million.
Someone like Guehi would have been perfect for Chelsea. Do not forget, he is even a Cobham graduate. But there is one silver lining for the Blues when it comes to the centre-back's move to Manchester City.
Good news for Chelsea as defender's move officially announced
As reported by the Express, Chelsea inserted a sell-on clause in Guehi’s contract when he moved to Crystal Palace in 2021. There are some suggestions that it could be in the region of 20 per cent.
Well, that will bring in some windfall to the club. But most would have preferred to see Chelsea sign Guehi themselves. He would have walked into this starting XI, and is a leader as well, another thing that the Blues are missing at the moment.
Unfortunately, it looks like the ownership is going to stubbornly continue on the path they have chosen, despite no real proof that the strategy is working. At this point, all we can do is wish them the best.
