Heidenheim 0-2 Chelsea: Blues Positives and Negatives
By Vishnu Raj
2. Jadon Sancho: Creative and Composed
Making his first start since mid-October, Jadon Sancho marked his return with two assists and a dazzling display on the right wing. His successful dribbles outnumbered any other player on the pitch, and his creativity posed constant problems for Heidenheim’s defense.
Sancho’s unselfish playstyle contrasted sharply with Noni Madueke’s recent selfish tendencies. Unlike Madueke, Sancho consistently prioritized finding teammates in better positions, which could allow Cole Palmer to thrive in attacking areas. Sancho's defensive contributions were also noteworthy, balancing Chelsea's right flank.
3. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall: The Engine in Midfield
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was Chelsea’s most influential midfielder, leading in passes into the final third and chances created. The second goal stemmed from an exquisite one-two with Sancho, showcasing Dewsbury-Hall’s vision and composure. Despite not being high in the central midfield pecking order, the former Leicester City man proved his ability to perform under pressure.
4. Clinical Finishes
Christopher Nkunku’s goal showcased his technical brilliance, with a deft touch and an exceptional finish. Mykhailo Mudryk added to the tally with a top-corner strike, reminiscent of his effort against Noah in the previous round. Mudryk’s 12 penalty box touches were the highest in the match, and his defensive discipline helped support Renato Veiga on the left flank.
5. Effective Offside Traps
Chelsea’s defensive line executed offside traps flawlessly, catching Heidenheim offside six times. This was a marked improvement compared to previous Premier League matches, such as the lapse against Leicester when Levi Colwill failed to maintain the line.
