When Chelsea signs or brings young players through the youth system, the end goal for them is to make a name for themselves in the first team, but some have to go elsewhere to hone their craft before they're ready to be introduced to full-time Premier League football.
Cobham has produced many talents in the past that have gone on to have very successful careers, whether that be at Chelsea or elsewhere, such as Reece James, who has captained Chelsea, Mason Mount, who was a key figure in their 2021 Champions League winning run, and players like Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise, and Declan Rice, who have come through the doors at Cobham but never got a chance at Chelsea.
As it is the international break, we look at the current crop of youngsters on loan trying to make their way elsewhere.
Jesse Derry (Sporting Lisbon)
Derry was sent to Portugal to gain valuable experience after making his Chelsea debut last season, and fans highly rate the young winger after the club acquired him from Crystal Palace.
Derry started his Sporting stint with a goal on his debut for the club against Monaco in a pre-season friendly, but since then in Liga Portugal, the Englishman has been starved of game time, only playing 26 minutes across the season so far. He has been an unused substitute in their last four competitive games.
Ryan Kavuma-McQueen (Portsmouth)
Out of the current young loanees, Kavuma McQueen has probably started the best out of them, impressing for Portsmouth in the Championship, bagging a goal and an assist in his opening seven Championship appearances.
He earned his first professional start against Lincoln in August, after impressing coming off the bench at halftime against QPR in their opening game, and was rewarded with getting his first senior goal.
Kavuma McQueen was praised by manager John Mousinho for his commitment, and "putting his body on the line" after playing through a double fracture in his right hand, and declining surgery which would have put him out for eight weeks.
Shumaira Mheuka (Celtic)
Once compared to Didier Drogba and Romelu Lukaku, Mheuka was the Premier League 2's top scorer last season with 17 goals in 17 games, helping Chelsea's under-21s (now Cobham New Gen) win the league. These performances earned him a loan move to Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.
Although Shim has only played 40 minutes in all competitions, and has yet to register a goal involvement, his performances have been impressive and unlucky not to have scored his first senior goal. This also highlights the leadership he has shown at such a young age, with the player staying behind to applaud the Celtic fans following their Old Firm defeat to Rangers on Sunday.
Datsan Satpaev (Burnley)
When Satpaev joined Chelsea in 2025, he came with an esteemed record, being Kazakhstan's youngest ever international, making his debut aged 16 years and 7 months, as well as being the Kazakh League's record departure.
He's currently getting his first taste of English football, playing for Burnley in the Championship, trying to help the side return to the Premier League after their relegation last season. Similar to Mheuka, he also hasn't got any goal involvements this season, but every time he gets on the ball, fans get off their feet with excitement, in the expectance of the Kazakh international making some magic.
Reggie Walsh (Wigan)
When Walsh joined Wigan on loan this summer, many Chelsea fans made the comparison to Reece James, the now Chelsea captain, when he was loaned out to Wigan for the 2018/19 season.
Many around Chelsea hold Walsh in high regard, and is showing that in his six appearances for Wigan and being a regular fixture in their team. In his time at the Blues, he made four appearances, including his Champions League and EFL Cup debuts, many believing he can become a similar version of Frank Lampard.
Although these youngsters haven't fully made their mark at Stamford Bridge yet, their time will come, and these stints away from the club will aid their development and come back to Chelsea as better players at the end of it.
