Chelsea are back in Premier League action after a dominant performance in the UEFA Conference League on Thursday night. They welcome struggling side Ipswich Town to Stamford Bridge in hopes of adding another three points to their Premier League total and further securing their place in the Champions League next season.
Ipswich had one of their most famous victories in recent years in December when they took Chelsea down 2-0 at Portman Road. It was during a serious down period for the Blues from December 22 to January 14 where they won just one out of five matches in the league and FA Cup. That loss came on the back of a stoppage time loss to Fulham and the Blues were clearly dejected from the upset.
This time the Blues are riding high on the confidence of a 3-0 victory over Legia Warsaw and they know that nothing less than 3 points is acceptable on Sunday. Enzo Maresca will surely trot out a full strength lineup knowing that he can rotate his squad heavily for Thursday’s home leg against Legia.
This match also gives Chelsea fans a chance to see transfer target Liam Delap up close and personal at Stamford Bridge. The Blues have been linked to the English forward as he wraps up an excellent debut season in the top flight.
Delap won a penalty and scored the opening goal in the reverse fixture and had a good case for man of the match. We hope he continues his hot streak to close out the season but definitely not on Sunday afternoon.
In the last fixture, Chelsea dominated possession 76-24 and had 20 shots on goal while hitting the woodwork twice but struggled to break down a stubborn Ipswich defense. It was a hugely frustrating performance for the Blues and they will be looking to score early and often to shake off the bad vibes from the previous matchup.
