For Chelsea, much of the work needed this summer was obvious, particularly in midfield. The Blues needed to replace the outgoing Enzo Fernández, and like it or not, his profile has been desperately missed in the middle of the pitch.
The club made a shambles of the transfer window as they failed to recruit a world-class midfielder, leaving the midfield ranks injured for the start, young inexperienced and square pegs in round holes.
So, the January transfer window is a priority but if not, then the summer. Should be all action to go and get Alex Scott and the man in question, Martin Zubimendi.
The perfect choice
Chelsea should make a move for Arsenal's World Cup winner and Premier League champion. After a fast start to last season, he appears to have fallen down the pecking order, with Myles Lewis-Skelly and Bruno Guimarães now seemingly ahead of him.
Zubimendi was a transfer target of Xabi Alonso last summer at Real Madrid, however he never opted to make a move for the midfielder, freeing him up to make the switch to Arsenal where he was vital in the early stages in their Premier League title victory.
The Spaniard has fallen down the pecking order due to criticism in the latter part of last season from fans and pundits, potentially leaving the door for a transfer and recoup that fee Arsenal paid Real Sociedad 18 months ago.
Still only 27 and coming off the back of multiple trophy wins, he brings many of the qualities Chelsea are looking for to strengthen their midfield. He is comfortable on the ball, picks the right pass, has an impressive range of distribution and can sit deep to control the tempo of a game. That is an area Chelsea have lacked most when Moisés Caicedo has been unavailable, making him an ideal partner for the Ecuadorian.
If Alonso is to stick with three at the back, then pair him with a combative midfielder such as Moises, and you could have the perfect duo. If business cannot be done then go all out for Alex Scott.
