Is Cole Palmer's form vs traditional big six a problem for Chelsea this season?
The 22-year-old has already bagged 7 goals and 5 assists in just 10 matches. Despite putting up incredible numbers, the Manchester native has caught the attention of a few with his rather lesser brilliant performances against the traditional top-six teams this season.
While there is no denying Palmer has been one of Chelsea's best players in the league, his output against the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United were not up to his regular standards.
He not only failed to score or assist in these games but did not necessarily have a major impact. The stats certainly indicate the game against United was not that bad an outing for the Blues star, but it was clear he was not his regular self.
With that being said, Palmer still amazed fans in the game against United with a moment of magic where he drove his first touch between Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte and ended up being fouled by the latter.
Another moment of pure magic was when he flicked the ball over Lisandro Martinez. The English player then got viciously fouled by the Argentinian defender, but highlights showcased how classy Palmer's touch was, which frustrated Martinez and forced him into taking such a step.
Barring these moments, Palmer barely was able to make an impact and this resulted in the game being a mere 1-1 draw. The former Manchester City player had the chance to do something magical when he had an attacking chance against United, but he squandered it by hitting the shot straight at Matthijs De Ligt.
To add to the point of Palmer going silent against traditional Big six, it is very important to go back to the Liverpool game. He had only one successful dribble in the entire game and failed to even register a shot on target. Liverpool are currently the team placed on top of the league and it could be said that he had an off day but the youngster displayed similar traits against a weaker United team.
Why does Palmer seem to slow down against the traditional big six ?
Well, Palmer has certainly earned the respect of his opposition as managers often have one of their players mark him for the entireity of the game. This has led to him not being as impactful as he would like but as Enzo Maresca stated in his press conference, this is something Chelsea will have to work on if they are to yield better results.
This season alone, Palmer has been the second most fouled player in the league only behind Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes. While it indicates, he is being given the star player treatment by his opponents, Chelsea will have to figure a way out to get results if he is having an off-day.
Palmer has started all of Chelsea's Premier League games and has managed to not score or assist in just four of them. The Blues have managed a win in one of the game, which was a 1-0 triumph against Bournemouth. Their results against United, City and Liverpool were rather disappointing and indicative of how important his brilliance is to the side.
