Chelsea avoided FA Cup Fifth Round humiliation by scoring twice in injury time to beat Wrexham.

Saturday's game at the Racecourse Ground saw the struggling Alejandro Garnacho fire the Blues into a stoppage-time lead before a 125th-minute goal from Pedro Neto sealed the result.

It wasn't just the goalscorers who played their part though. Chelsea welcomed summer signing Dario Essugo back from a long term injury layoff and the Portugal under-21 couldn't have been more impressive.

Dario Essugo back with a bang following Wrexham performance

Despite joining the club last summer, Essugo has barely featured for the Blues after a series of injuries forced him out of action. He was first ruled out for four months last September after he suffered a thigh injury away on international duty before returning and picking up another niggle.

However, named on the bench during last weekend's cup win, Essugo was brought on after 65 minutes in place of fellow returnee Romeo Lavia.

The 20-year-old not only added energy and poise to Chelsea's team but his contributions in the form of two stoppage time assists proved pivotal.

Speaking to Chelsea's official website, Essugo admitted he was not only delighted to be back on the pitch, but also emphasised the collective win far outweighs anything else.

"Of course, it is a very good feeling because it was a very tough moment. At a new club, a new experience, but for me, it's very good to be back. Since the first day I got the injuries I had, I’ve had to wait but now I'm back and I feel very good.

It is very good to help the team to win. But it's football, you know? This (the cross for Garnacho) is not the most important thing for me, it is most important to help the team and that's it. It was very tough because we were losing, but we won and that is the most important thing."

Essugo's outing against Wrexham was just his fourth appearance since his £18.5 million move from Sporting Lisbon nearly 12 months ago.

Essugo in contention to feature against PSG

Although tougher tests still await, particularly in the form of PSG, who Chelsea will travel to play later this week in a first leg Champions League Last 16 tie, Liam Rosenior will be feeling confident he has the squad to cope with the holders.

Essugo and Lavia's return last weekend will see Rosenior head to Paris will a lot more options.

And while Essugo is not expected to start against Luis Enrique's men, his most recent performance has certainly put him in contention to make his manager's match day squad.
