Moises Caicedo is now Ecuador's official captain after the armband was handed to him by Enner Valencia.

The former West Ham United and Everton player started the tournament as Ecuador's captain. However, he is now 36 and appears to think that Caicedo is better suited to the role. This is no surprise, as the Chelsea defensive midfielder is one of the best players in his position in the world.

At just 24 years of age, Caicedo will likely be Ecuador's captain for the long-term. The experience of leading his country for the rest of the World Cup will be valuable for him. Despite his age, Caicedo already has 64 caps for Ecuador, so he is experienced enough to wear the captain's armband.

Caicedo has captained Ecuador on previous occasions, but the honor of being his country's official skipper is very prestigious. However, with great power comes great responsibility, and the pressure will be on Caicedo to take Ecuador to the next level.

Ecuador had a bad start to their World Cup campaign, losing 1-0 to the Ivory Coast. They then drew 0-0 with Curacao. However, a surprise 2-1 win over Germany ensured their place in the round of 32. Caicedo's side will face the co-hosts, Mexico, in Mexico City next. This is a daunting prospect, and not many will fancy Ecuador's chances of progressing.
