Chelsea was dumped out of the EFL Cup by Newcastle United in the fourth round. This may have come as a surprise to anyone who wasn't paying attention, but those who watched the league fixture between these teams four days prior would have noticed that there was much to suggest this game would go the way it did.

No one impressed, including head coach Enzo Maresca, as Newcastle United settled the game in the first half, with the Blues failing to score in either half. Here are the Chelsea player ratings from the EFL Cup elimination.

Filip Jorgensen: 5/10

Jorgensen has been blamed for the goals Chelsea conceded against Newcastle last night, or at least one of the goals. While he bears some responsibility for the shambolic outing, his fault lies not in his impeccable passing in his own six-yard box. As the goalkeeper, he sets the tempo for the buildup, which means that when he passes it short, the team feels the need to continue playing that way. That is fine for the first few minutes, but after noticing how effectively Newcastle was disrupting the short buildup, he should have taken it long more often. It should be noted, though, that the reason he did not take it long more often is that Maresca has not given the players the freedom to choose or change buildup style in-game.

Axel Disasi: 4/10

As is customary, many Chelsea fans found another reason to use confirmation bias in evaluating player performances. However, it cannot be ignored that he had a poor game, winning no tackles, losing 4 of 6 ground duels, and scoring an own goal. It's a performance he'd want to forget very soon.
