Perhaps Pedro Neto staying at Chelsea was fate after all

Pedro Neto has signed a new Chelsea contract to keep him at the club until at least 2032 and his decision to remain at the club this summer looks like it could be fate after all.

The winger was subject to plenty of interest from several teams during the transfer window, but no move away from Stamford Bridge ever materialised, meaning he remained in West London.

While his Chelsea career has been mixed so far since he signed in 2024, his start to the 2026/27 season has propelled him to a new level as a player who can cause plenty of problems for the opposition.

Neto signed for Chelsea from Wolves ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, joining for a reported £51.3 million fee, but he struggled to make a major impact with mixed performances throughout his debut term, scoring nine goals and providing nine assists in 51 appearances across all competitions.

He improved the following year with 10 goals and 10 assists in 52 matches, but the Blues' 10th-place finish and failure to achieve qualification for European football cast a shadow over his performances.

As Xabi Alonso took over as manager in the summer, Neto's future was uncertain. He attracted interest from several clubs, including Manchester City, led by former boss Enzo Maresca, but ultimately remained with Chelsea.

That appears to have been the right decision as prior to putting pen to paper on a new six-year contract, the Portugal international enjoyed a fine start to the campaign with two goals in five appearances.

Having operated primarily as a winger on either flank, and sometimes as a striker, in the first two seasons of his Chelsea career, Neto has adapted to Alonso's new system this season, playing in multiple games as a deeper right midfielder, almost operating as a wing back at times.

Adaptation to a new role and several top performances seems to have saved his Chelsea career, even to the extent of being given a new contract. If the fresh deal didn't make it clear enough he does appear to be wanted under Alonso, appearing in every single one of his side's games so far.

Neto remaining at Chelsea looks like it might have been fate after all. He's already played a key part in his side's victories and adjustment to Alonso's system should set him on his way to being part of a Blues team that is eager to win trophies this season. It could have been so different for the winger, but he is still a Chelsea player and it looks to be staying that way for a long time.
