Bournemouth 0 - 1 Chelsea: The good, the bad, and the ugly
The Ugly: Shooting and shot creation
It was appalling to see Chelsea churn out the toothless shots against the home side. It is telling that £1.7bn has been spent and Bournemouth players are still better shooters than Chelsea players. This is beyond unacceptable.
Chelsea took 10 shots, but as bad as that is, only three were on target. This means that in 90 minutes the Blues only troubled Travers three times, Nkunku's winner being the third.
The expected goals on target (xGoT), which also measures shooting quality, show that outside of Nkunku's 86th-minute shot, Chelsea could only gather 0.19 xGoT from the previous two shots on target. Compared to Chelsea, Bournemouth gathered 2.23 xGoT, according to FotMob, meaning that Iraola's men should have scored over two goals based on the quality of the team's shooting.
This shooting issue has also been present for several seasons. The fact that it is still there after several billions have been spent, is a knock on the owners and Sporting Directors. As for shot creation, I mean - Chelsea took 10 shots. Enough said!
Conclusion
The west Londoners got away with an abysmal performance overall, and while that in and off itself is not an issue, the fact that these performances are now more common than not, shows that Maresca is not making progress at a quick enough rate. Nkunku is still playing a substitute role, but if he produces more crucial goals like against the Cherries, he will push through to the top of the pile soon.
