Selection Headache for Maresca

João Félix’s genius was on full display as he audaciously scooped the ball over Barrow’s defense for Chelsea’s opener in the 8th minute. The Portuguese star later nearly added to the tally with a sublime free kick that struck the post, bounced off the goalkeeper, and into the net, though it was ultimately ruled as an own goal.

Christopher Nkunku, however, stole the spotlight with a beautiful hat-trick. His first goal came from Félix's scooped ball assist, followed by a delicate dink for his second in the 15th minute. Nkunku completed his treble in the 75th minute after dispossessing the goalkeeper and calmly finishing into an empty net.

Mykhailo Mudryk was also lively, assisting Pedro Neto’s first goal for the club with a perfectly timed square ball in the 48th minute.

Chelsea’s fluid, attacking display highlighted the team’s growing adaptation to Maresca’s style. But with so many players stepping up, the Chelsea boss could face a welcome selection headache in the coming weeks. When asked about the challenge of choosing between his in-form players, Maresca said:

"This is the most important thing for me, that they make my choices difficult. It means they are all performing well. This is key."

"[The number of changes] depends on the moment in the season. You can have injuries and other issues. Right now, we have a fully fit squad, so we’re able to share minutes around. I'm happy for Pedro Neto, Christopher Nkunku, João Félix, and for all of them."

It's the kind of "headache" every manager welcomes, as the squad continues to adapt to Maresca’s style, and the season progresses.

With players like Nkunku, Félix, and Mudryk stepping up in key moments, Maresca faces the challenge of squad selection, a promising sign as the Blues push for silverware. The road to Wembley and beyond may be tough, but Chelsea’s talent and growing cohesion under Maressa suggest the Blues are more than capable of rising to the occasion.
