Conor Gallagher's anticipated transfer from Chelsea to Atletico Madrid has encountered a significant hurdle, with the midfielder returning to Chelsea's Cobham training ground as negotiations continue. The England international was recently spotted at Atletico's Metropolitano Stadium and spent several days in Madrid, but his £33 million move remains in flux.

The complications began when Chelsea's deal for Spanish striker Samu Omorodion fell through over personal terms, impacting Atletico’s ability to fund Gallagher’s transfer. After signing Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez for £81.5 million, Atletico Madrid now needs to offset this expenditure with a substantial sale. Omorodion's rejection of Chelsea's terms has left both clubs seeking alternatives.

Negotiations between Chelsea and Atletico persist, with the potential return of Joao Felix to Chelsea seen as pivotal in completing Gallagher's move. Felix, who enjoyed a six-month loan spell at Chelsea in 2023, is keen on a return. However, the agreement on financial terms remains a sticking point. Atletico has reportedly set a deadline for Wednesday to finalize both deals, increasing the pressure on all parties involved.

Further complicating matters, Newcastle United have emerged as a potential suitor, looking to swoop in and secure Gallagher's signature. With only 11 months left on his Chelsea contract, Gallagher's sale is a priority to prevent a free transfer. Although Gallagher has a deep affection for Chelsea and captained the team last season, he views a move to Atletico as crucial for gaining regular playing time.

Back in London, Gallagher is currently training with the under-21s, alongside Trevoh Chalobah and Armando Broja, all of whom are separated from first-team activities as their futures are decided. The 24-year-old turned down offers from two Premier League clubs to pursue his goal of more consistent playing time in Spain.

Chelsea finds itself in yet another intriguing transfer saga, also working on a swap deal with Napoli for Victor Osimhen. As the transfer window draws to a close, the coming weeks promise to be pivotal, with clubs racing to finalize deals and solidify their rosters.
