Why Chelsea should (or shouldn’t) take a loss by selling Mykhailo Mudryk

Investing big sums of money in a player just to sell him for much less is something that no club wishes for, but it might be Chelsea’s best option with Mykhailo Mudryk.

The Blues spent well over £1bn on transfers since new owner Todd Boehly replaced Roman Abramovich in 2022, bringing in over 40 players in the process.

While some transfers like Cole Palmer have proven their worth, some failed to shine in the Blue shirt.

A player who surely falls into the “failed transfers” bracket is the Ukrainian winger, Mykhailo Mudryk.

Since joining in the 2022/2023 season, the 23-year-old has only 12 goal contributions in 63 games, struggling to get into the starting lineup and failing to impress when he’s given the chance.

Mudryk’s arrival to Chelsea wasn’t cheap, costing the Blues £89m after a bidding war against arch-rivals Arsenal, which makes the loss of selling him significant as he’s worth only €35m right now (per Transfermarkt).

Chelsea's latest transfer window saw them bringing in more attacking options, with signings like Pedro Neto, Joao Felix, and Jadon Sancho, which makes Mudryk’s chance of playing time even less likely than it already was.

Mudryk did show flashes of talent looking unstoppable in some games, watching him in his element is something Chelsea fans haven’t seen since their former number 10 Eden Hazard, but he’s just not consistent enough, and Chelsea might want to cash out on him as long as they can before his price drops even more, especially with them having much better attacking options now.

Selling the Ukrainian might end up being a big mistake, as he might catch form which with his abilities make him a world-class winger, but right now Chelsea has good depth and might be better off getting some money out of him while it’s possible.
