Chelsea have several injury concerns ahead of Manchester United’s visit, with both sides facing a crucial Premier League fixture.
Maxence Lacroix, Emi Martínez and Joao Pedro are expected to miss the clash, leaving Xabi Alonso with some important selection decisions to make. Given the available options, the Chelsea boss could revert to a 4-2-3-1 formation.
Here is our predicted starting XI for the fixture:
Predicted XI
GK - Mike Penders
The Belgian goalkeeper was decent in midweek, so he needs to build on that performance with another strong showing. A clean sheet would go a long way towards earning him the nickname 'Magic Mike' in future predicted XIs.
RB - Josh Acheampong
He should continue his development at right-back, where he could enjoy a relatively comfortable afternoon if United's recent attacking struggles continue.
CB - Wesley Fofana
With Lacroix ruled out through injury, Fofana looks set to step in. He will need to raise his game considerably if he is to convince Alonso and win back the trust of Chelsea supporters.
CB - Levi Colwill
Colwill could play a key role in helping Chelsea secure all three points.
LB - Pep Chavarria
The left flank needs an attack-minded full back, one that can overlap, as Rogers is likely to drift inside and contribute to the attack through the middle.
CM - Moises Caicedo
Despite coming off against Liverpool, Alonso insisted it was a precaution rather than an injury. He should now be fit and ready to return to the starting XI.
CM - Jordan Henderson
The boos at Anfield may have overshadowed his return, but he will be hoping to put that behind him and replicate his impressive performance against Bournemouth.
RW - Pedro Neto
I would love to see a Brazilian on the right, but that seems unlikely given Pedro Neto’s status as Alonso’s preferred option throughout the season. He will have the chance to test his compatriot Diogo Dalot if the United defender starts at left-back.
AM - Cole Palmer
Will come back into the fold as he looks to make an impact on the game against the boyhood supporting club. What a way to apologise with a superb performance though.
LW - Morgan Rogers
His form has dipped recently, perhaps due to the heavy workload over the past year. That is understandable, but he remains Chelsea’s best option on the left.
ST - Danny Welbeck
Emmanuel Emegha is breathing down his neck, he cannot afford another poor performance. Facing his former club should give him extra motivation to deliver a display that leaves the opposition defence quaking in their boots.
