Chelsea only completed one signing prior to the start of the Club World Cup. Liam Delap was brought in after his release clause was activated. But ideally, the Blues would have liked to have a few more fresh faces on the flight to the United States. Two players they tried and failed to sign before the tournament are Mike Maignan and Jamie Gittens.
Chelsea appear to have adopted completely different stances when it comes to those two. It is believed that the Maignan chapter is now closed for the Blues. On the other hand, they are actively trying to get a deal done for Gittens as soon as possible.
Chelsea are lacking a right-footed winger at the moment. Neither Pedro Neto nor Noni Madueke is a good fit on the left flank and playing them there affects the balance of the team that Enzo Maresca is trying to achieve.
As reported by The Guardian, Chelsea are pushing to finalise an agreement to sign Gittens from Borussia Dortmund. They are closing in on a deal and despite links with Bayern Munich, the Blues are confident that they won't be overtaken by the Bavarians.
'Pushing' - Chelsea close to agreeing their next signing
Gittens ticks a lot of boxes that Chelsea look for when signing players these days. Of course, any move for a youngster will come with a bit of risk.
Just look at how things have turned out for Jadon Sancho in the Premier League. He did a lot more than anything Gittens has achieved at Borussia Dortmund so far.
In fact, he was not even in the starting XI anymore towards the end of last season. So, Chelsea would be showing a lot of trust in his potential if they do sign him for a transfer fee in the region of £50 million.
