Earlier this week several news outlets reported that Chelsea are interested in Real Madrid star Rodrygo and are planning a summer bid. The Brazilian forward has been with Real since 2019 but has seen his opportunities dwindle with the arrival of Kylian Mbappe in the Spanish capital so he may be looking for a way out.

These same reports suggest that the Blues may have to pay £120 million for Rodrygo’s services which seems to be the going rate for a goal-scoring winger these days. AC Milan’s Rafael Leao has been valued at around the same amount and it may just be a matter of which player is willing to leave their current club for the friendly confines of Stamford Bridge.

If money were no object then it would be a no brainer to bring Rodrygo to Chelsea. The Brazilian has been a prolific goal scorer for Madrid since the 2022 season and has 40 goals and 27 assists over that span. Chelsea are sorely in need of a goal-scoring winger and he fits that bill perfectly.

Rodrygo plays primarily on the right wing but is capable of playing on the left wing or as a center forward. This would allow Enzo Maresca to shuffle his forward lineup as needed with Rodrygo being the centerpiece of the attack.

The only concerns about Rodrygo are related to finances. He is still just 24 so his age is not an issue but his transfer value is astronomical and his wages are very high as well. The Brazilian makes around £250k per week which would put him on par with Reece James and Wesley Fofana at the top of the Chelsea wage table.

If Chelsea make this massive purchase we wonder if this would preclude them from also investing in a striker which is as big of a position of need as right wing. Perhaps a combination of £120m for Rodrygo and £30m for Liam Delap is the plan and that could solve a lot of problems in the Chelsea attack.

Regardless of who the Chelsea board decide to pursue it is painfully obvious that the club needs a serious injection if talent in attack. Whenever Cole Palmer is not on the pitch they seem devoid of ideas and lack any players that can unlock the defense with some creativity. This would be solved in a major with the addition of Rodrygo and we believe that he would be worth every penny.
