Robert Sánchez

Perhaps the worst player in world football. Robert Sánchez started as Chelsea’s No. 1 goalkeeper in the 2023-24 season, and he was disastrous. He consistently made mistakes, invited pressure from the opposition, and even directly contributed to goals being conceded. Yet, for some reason, Mauricio Pochettino persisted with him until an injury finally forced a change. When Djordje Petrović came in, he never relinquished his spot.

Enzo Maresca claimed to have watched hours of Chelsea’s previous season ahead of taking over in 2024-25. Yet, for some inexplicable reason, he decided Sánchez should be his No. 1 and sent Petrović on loan without even watching him play for Chelsea. To no one’s surprise, Sánchez continued to perform disastrously, making errors, inviting pressure, and conceding avoidable goals. But Maresca, for some reason, stuck with him.

By February, Sánchez was finally dropped. However, for some bizarre reason, he was suddenly Chelsea’s cup goalkeeper, almost as if he had to play, despite goalkeepers not needing rotation for rest. Even with his continued poor performances, Sánchez was eventually restored as Chelsea’s No. 1 once again. Maresca acted as if Sánchez just needed rest to “get back to his best,” as if he were a promising young player instead of someone who had been consistently poor for two years.

Unsurprisingly, Sánchez continued to be a liability even after that so-called break. There was a reason he was Brighton’s third-choice goalkeeper behind two average keepers. Yet, Chelsea not only signed him but still insists on persisting with him. Chelsea fans, rival fans, and pundits all recognize how poor Sánchez is, but for some reason, Maresca seems to back him as if he is Chelsea’s most important player.
