Chelsea’s latest rebuild under Xabi Alonso gave an idea of what he wanted, but there are still clear areas that could be strengthened when the summer transfer window opens. The Blues have invested heavily in young talent over recent windows, building a squad filled with exciting attacking options and players capable of developing into key figures.
Yet, for all the quality Chelsea possess, there are still weaknesses that could prevent them from competing consistently at the very top. Defensive stability, midfield balance and experience are among the areas that could benefit from further investment, particularly if Alonso is expected to challenge for major honours.
Another busy summer may be on the horizon, but Chelsea do not necessarily need another major overhaul. Instead, three carefully chosen additions could provide the missing pieces and help turn an exciting squad into a complete team, capable of winning the league and going far in Europe.
Alex Scott - £110million
Alex Scott could be the piece that completes Chelsea’s midfield because he offers a different profile to the players already at Xabi Alonso’s disposal. Moisés Caicedo provides the defensive platform, while Scott can carry the ball forward, progress possession and help connect midfield with the attack.
That combination could give Chelsea greater balance in the middle of the pitch. Scott has the technical ability to play through pressure but also the defensive work rate to contribute without the ball, allowing Caicedo to focus on protecting the defence. With Chelsea’s attacking talent already providing creativity and goal threat, adding a midfielder capable of linking those areas could give Alonso a more rounded and adaptable team.
Alessandro Bastoni - £60million
The Italian defender was heavily linked with Barcelona during the summer, and his performances for Inter show why he could go a long way towards addressing Chelsea’s defensive problems. Bastoni is an established Italy international with extensive Champions League experience, but the biggest appeal compared with other defensive targets is his familiarity with the back-three system Alonso is currently using.
That tactical understanding could make Bastoni a particularly natural fit for Chelsea. His ability to operate on the left side of a three, progress the ball from defence and contribute to build-up play would give Alonso another reliable option at the back.
His arrival would also put pressure on Levi Colwill’s position on the left side of the defence. Bastoni’s experience and familiarity with the system could see him become the preferred option in that role, increasing competition for places and potentially forcing Colwill to fight for his position in Alonso’s starting XI.
Diogo Costa - £50million
The Emi Martinez hasn’t worked and the Chelsea fans can see through the Argentine hype.
Diogo Costa could be the final piece of Chelsea’s goalkeeping rebuild, offering the consistency and quality that has been missing between the posts. The Porto and Portugal goalkeeper has Champions League experience and the composure to play out from the back, making him a strong fit for Xabi Alonso’s system.
His distribution would allow Chelsea to build from deep, while his shot-stopping and command of the box could provide greater security behind the defence. Costa would also bring valuable experience to a young squad and give Chelsea a potential long-term No.1.
