Chelsea head into October looking for a fresh start, both in the Premier League table and on the pitch, after a disappointing end to September. There are plenty of areas for improvement, and Xabi Alonso will be hoping his side can put things right when football returns.
The international break is in full swing, and let's be honest, it can be a bit of a bore. Thankfully, Manchester City's penalty drama has given Premier League fans something to talk about. Still, another week of waiting remains before Chelsea are back in action.
So, what lies ahead for Chelsea in October, and where do the Blues need to improve most?
Tricky October
Chelsea face a tricky run of fixtures in October, with Premier League clashes against Bournemouth, Everton, Tottenham and Manchester United, alongside a Carabao Cup trip to Liverpool. It is a challenging five-game stretch for Xabi Alonso to navigate, particularly with his side looking to bounce back from a disappointing end to September.
There is some encouragement for the Blues, though, with three of their four league games taking place at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea will travel to Everton for their first trip outside the capital this season, before heading to Anfield for their cup tie. If Alonso can make home advantage count, October could provide an opportunity to get Chelsea's season back on track.
Debutants on show
Chelsea fans could see a new face or two when the Blues return to action against Bournemouth, either in the starting XI or among the substitutes. Both Marco Palestra and Emmanuel Emagha have been pictured in training, putting them in contention to feature when the Premier League resumes.
The Italian is more likely to feature as a right or left wing-back. However, if Xabi Alonso switches to a back four, his chances of playing could be limited, with Reece James and Pep Chavarría expected to occupy the full-back positions.
Xabi under pressure?
If results don’t go his way in this month then Xabi Alonso will be the man under pressure from the fans and journalists. The reputation and prestige of the man will give him time and Chelsea hierarchy have put their faith in the Spaniard, so a rash decision is unlikely to come before the end of the season.
