West Ham United vs Chelsea match preview
Can Chelsea make it four WSL wins in a row? Last Sunday, the Blues got the better of fierce London rivals Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, with Alyssa Thompson lashing home the only goal of the afternoon on the rebound shortly before half time.
This means that, since drawing with Aston Villa on the opening day, Sonia Bompastor's team have won three league games in a row, all without conceding. They'd previously crushed Manchester United 5-0 in Leigh, before a routine 2-0 victory over Birmingham at home.
However, in mid-week, Chelsea's winning streak did come to an end in the Champions League. In a game of few chances, they were held to a goalless draw by OL Lyonnes at Parc Olympique Lyonnais. Nevertheless, to earn a point from, by far, their toughest league phase fixture is no bad thing. As attention turns back to domestic matters, Chelsea are widely expected to cruise to victory here.
So, can West Ham United spring a massive surprise? Well, three defeats from four WSL matches so far would suggest not. Last weekend, the Hammers were beaten 2-1 by Manchester United on the road, with Viviane Asseyi's injury time spot-kick little more than a consolation.
Rita Guarino's team have previously been beaten by Tottenham and Everton, but did defeat London City Lionesses in their home opener last month, one of the surprise results of the season so far. Well, if West Ham are able to repeat that feat against Chelsea, it would be an even bigger shock.
West Ham United team news
The Irons beat Southampton in the League Cup on Wednesday, with Rita Guarino making seven changes for that match; Constance Picaud, Inès Belloumou, Oona Siren, Seraina Piubel and Kelly Gago the only players to start both. Thus, key figures such as captain Katie Zelem will be well rested.
Chelsea team news
Rotation will be more of an issue for Sonia Bompastor, having just faced two of Europe's best teams already this week. Lauren James could return, having only come off the bench for the final half an hour in France, while Naomi Girma is se to remain sidelined, yet to feature this season due to injury.
Predicted Line-ups
- West Ham United predicted lineup: Picaud-Inconnu; Riessen, Nyström, Cascarino, Belloumou; Zelem, Kumagai, Piubel, Asseyi, Siren; Gago.
- Chelsea predicted lineup: Hampton; Carpenter, Bronze, Buurman, McCabe; Walsh, Potter, James, Thompson, Malard; Kaptein.
- Score prediction: West Ham United 0-3 Chelsea.
