What Liam Delap said about playing for Hull City amid Chelsea exit links

Liam Delap is unlikely to still be a Chelsea player next season following a disappointing first campaign at Stamford Bridge.

The 23-year-old joined the Blues from Ipswich Town 12 months ago in a deal worth £30 million. He was expected to become the team's first choice centre forward but just one league goal in 28 appearances saw him flop.

Set to make way for a proven goalscorer once Xabi Alonso officially takes charge on July 1, Delap will be expecting to join a new club over the summer.

Liam Delap linked with Hull City return

Although there has been speculation a return to Ipswich Town could be a great move, another club has emerged as a possible destination.

Hull City's amazing run to win promotion to the Premier League has meant the Tigers now need to add players if they're to stay up next season.

The Tigers will need a bigger squad and players who are already familiar with the demands of the Premier League.

Although the Championship is a notoriously difficult league to get out of, the top flight is a different beast altogether. Surviving will be the club's only goal — something so many sides fail to do in their first season back in the big time.

Because of this, it's not a surprise to see Delap name mentioned alongside the Premier League newcomers'.

Delap loved his time at Hull City

Delap knows Hull City very well, too.

The 23-year-old spent the 2023-24 season on loan from Manchester City there and became an instant fan-favourite after he contributed to 10 goals. His efforts during his loan saw the Hull City fans chant "we want you to stay" at the end of that campaign.

And responding to the supporters' message at the time, Delap, as quoted by the Hull Daily Mail, admitted he loved it at the MKM Stadium.

"That's nice to hear... When you're appreciated somewhere, it's a nice feeling as a player," he said.

"I do love it here and I do love the fans... I love playing and playing with the manager and with the boys. We'll just see what happens and, you know, there's conversations to be had."

Hull City have yet to make a formal offer for Chelsea's number nine, but if they revisit the striker's comments from a couple of years ago, it might remind them of what a success he was.
