Morgan Rogers is set to make his competitive Chelsea debut tomorrow after completing a British-record £117 million move from Aston Villa. With the midfielder owned by around 25% of Fantasy Premier League managers, his expected minutes will be a major talking point for FPL managers going into the opening rounds of the Premier League
Rogers arrives at Stamford Bridge following an impressive campaign with Villa, where he registered 10 Premier League goals and eight assists last season, totalling an impressive 169 points. Priced at £7.5m in FPL, his attacking potential makes him one of the most popular midfield options in his price bracket.
The deadline has been set, however if Rogers has been selected in the starting XI then it could be an inspired choice should he hit the ground running. He is the second most selected Chelsea player currently but a question lies over one thing.
Despite the positives, there is one obvious concern heading into the opening gameweek: minutes.
Player | Value | Selected rate |
|---|---|---|
Joao Pedro | £7.5M | 63.4% |
Morgan Rogers | £7.5M | 25.2% |
Cole Palmer | £9.5M | 10.4% |
Maxence Lacroix | £6.0M | 9.5% |
Reece James | £5.5M | 9.4% |
An urge of patience has already been warned by Xabi Alonso going into Monday's fixtur, potentially suggesting a bench role or 60-70minute performance.
The 23-year-old was part of England's World Cup campaign and was given an extended break before joining up with Chelsea. The attacking midfielder only returned to his new home in London to start work on August 11, meaning he missed Chelsea's Asia tour and only had one pre-season game.
That lack of preparation could make a full 90 minutes unlikely, even if Xabi Alonso decides to hand his record signing a starting role. The crowd will be looking forward though to seeing the cold partnership of him and Palmer, an exciting of the two most eciting attackers.
There is some encouragement for FPL managers, though. Rogers did make his Chelsea debut against Real Sociedad, playing 62 minutes and scoring within 11 minutes of coming on.
With Chelsea needing their £117m signing to quickly settle into Alonso's system, Rogers has a strong chance of starting. However, FPL managers should be prepared for a potential early substitution, making his expected minutes the key question ahead of Gameweek 1.
With Brighton next at Stamford Bridge, FPL manager should stay patient with their new signing and avoid the transfer out should Rogers not shine or play past the magic 60 minute mark.
