Chelsea FC have been asked to play a friendly by Scottish club East Stirlingshire FC to honor a deal the two clubs made more than fifty years ago as part of a transfer. The Daily Mail reported today that the two clubs made an agreement in 1962 on a £5,000 transfer for defender Eddie McCreadie with a friendly to be played at each team’s home stadium as part of the deal.

Chelsea FC and East Stirling played the first friendly in Scotland at Firs Park but the two clubs never met at Stamford Bridge as was originally agreed upon. The current chairman of the club, Tony Ford, “come across the old documentation” and contacted the Blues to see if they would be willing to play a friendly against his club. Chelsea FC has yet to respond but perhaps they could make this a testimonial match for Frank Lampard or Ashley Cole if both players do end up leaving the club.

Chairman of The Shire, Tony Ford on the friendly with Chelsea FC:

"“As far as we can tell it is a legally binding agreement that sets out the terms of the transfer, which included cash plus home and away games between the clubs. I’m not sure if a game against us was in Mr Mourinho’s pre-season plans but you never know.”Source: The Daily Mail"

Apparently Chelsea FC came out very much on top in this deal. They received a player in McCreadie who ended up making over 300 appearances for the club for a small sum even in 1962 and they only had to play one friendly so far. This summer the club will likely only play domestic friendlies because of the World Cup but this could be seen as a fun way to honor Chelsea FC’s past and the club’s roots. The club has come a long way since the deal with East Stirling was made but as that old saying goes, “you can’t forget where you came from”.
