Pot 3 Opponent – Sporting CP

Pot 3 was full of potentially sticky opponents, so Chelsea will be content with drawing Sporting CP from a pot that contained Bayer Leverkusen and Ajax. The excitement and elation that Sporting fans met the return of Nani with perhaps says all you need to know about the quality of the Portuguese side. Either that or they haven’t watched Nani play in a Man United shirt. Keeper and captain Rui Patrício provides them a solid foundation and similar to our games against Schalke, it will be crucial for Chelsea not to take the win for granted.

William Carvalho is a much talked about young talent in the centre of midfield. The 22 year old has been linked with a variety of the top clubs in Europe, including Chelsea, but if he stays with Sporting for another season he will be crucial to their hopes in the Champions League. He offers immense physicality in the middle of the park and it would be exciting from a footballing perspective to see how Matić and Fabregas fare against him.
