Pot 4 Opponent – NK Maribor

If it wasn’t for the fact that Maribor just knocked out Celtic en route to the Champions League Group Stage, most people would not know much about the Slovenian champions. The theme of this draw for Chelsea is certainly not underestimating opponents and Celtic paid the price for doing just that. Those who watched the two legs between Maribor and Celtic will have seen a well organised side that will be stubborn in defence and therefore difficult for Chelsea to breakdown.

Their purple home kit and yellow away kit will certainly bring some vibrant colours to Group G and Maribor will no doubt be sensing a chance to sneak through in second in the group behind Chelsea. Their squad is made up primarily of home grown players, but their captain and talisman is Brazilian Marcos Tavares. He is a club legend having been a regular since 2008. His love of the club was clear when, after scoring the goal that would go on to knock Celtic out, he couldn’t watch from the side-lines. If Chelsea can marshal the Brazilian they will go a long way to eliminating Maribor’s biggest threat.
