Lionel Messi To Chelsea FC Rumors Heating Up – Could This Actually Happen?

facebooktwitterreddit

The football world blew up when it was noticed that Barcelona and Argentina superstar Lionel Messi not only followed the official Chelsea FC Instagram account, but also followed left back Filipe Luis, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, and former teammate Cesc Fabregas. What also helps fuel the fire is that all of this is happening a day after Messi was benched for Barcelona’s match against David Moyes’s Real Sociedad, which they went on to lose 1-0. Messi also missed an open training session on Monday which was attended by thousands of children. This adds more credence to the rumors that the superstar seems very unsettled at the Catalan club and may be looking for a way out.

There are many other factors that could point Messi to a move at Stamford Bridge. One factor is that Messi is the ambassador for Turkish Airlines, Chelsea’s new kit sponsor starting next season. There is also the fact that Messi is sponsored by Adidas, Chelsea’s kit providers. Seeing the Argentine light up the scoring charts in a Nike kit must be burning up the Adidas executives and they would love to see him in the famous three stripes from head to toe. There have been reports in recent years that kit and club sponsors may one day have an impact on transfer dealings. Some go as far as to say that these sponsors may even pay for a percentage of the transfer fee to get their player on the team of their choice.

The other factor is that Cesc Fabregas and Messi are very close friends and the story goes that Messi begged Barca to bring in Fabregas from Arsenal. Their wives are also very good friends and we all know that a happy wife usually means a happy life. Mark Schwarzer is also moving on to Leicester, opening up an international player spot in our squad. These are all just small points, but take it for what it is worth.

The likelihood of all this actually going through is unfortunately pretty slim considering the financial climate that football is in. Jose Mourinho has stated in interviews that the signing of Messi would simply cost too much and that it would interfere with Financial Fair Play. This could very well be a smokescreen as the manager tries to deflect attention from what would be one of the biggest transfers in football history. It would be very difficult to work around the FFP regulations as it would require us to make multiple big sales from the club. However Chelsea is in excellent shape financially because of some very astute deals in recent years involving selling high on some of our more popular players. As much as any Blues fan would love to see it, it’s safe not to get your hopes too high on this deal going through. Messi may have to wait a little longer to play on a cold and wet Wednesday night in Stoke.
