Chelsea FC returned to Premier League action with a visit from the Citizens of Manchester City and Frank Lampard, a team with a lesser shade of blue. In order to set up this match, let’s take look at Chelsea and Jose Mourinho’s past run-ins with Manchester City and Manuel Pellegrini:
- Chelsea headed into this game having only lost 2 of their last 9 matches against Man City (4W-3D-2L)
- Mourinho is 7W-3D-2L in his 12 matches against Pellegrinoooo
- Chelsea are 11W-5D-1L in their last 17 Premier League home games against Manchester City
I’m biased in saying that this was easily the most exciting match-up of the season with these two teams battling for the Premier League trophy, but don’t take my word for it:
Game remains very tense. One of the biggest ever TV audiences for a domestic football match - and all on the edge of their seats.

No thanks to a fresh round of injuries and a transfer merry-go-round, Jose Mourinho had to dig deep to come up with 18 players for such a big game today. If you’re one of the Chelsea fans that is pushing for the Academy players getting more opportunities, you definitely got your wish. Here was Chelsea’s lineup and bench:

Thanks to a great opening goal by Loic Remy and a surprisingly delicate ball by Ivanovic, Hazard played the most beautiful one-touch ball right through the six that Joe Hart could only admire and Kompany could only act surprised as he reacted too slowly. At that point, we were all yelling COME ON YOU BLUES!

As the chants were still ringing around Stamfod Bridge, Courtois tried to do too much by chasing after a cross he probably never had any business going for. It drew him out of position for Sergio Aguero’s “shross” (shot/cross) that somehow pinged off of little David Silva to equalize.
The second half didn’t provide much excitement until Frank Lampard stepped up to be substituted on for Fernando. Thankfully Lampard wasn’t able to replicate his first-leg antics and had a rather quiet 20 minutes. After the final whistle blew and the game ended tied, Lampard took his time visiting each of the stands and clapped them up out of respect and in response, the fans sang the Super Frank song.
I think it’s safe to say that Frank Lampard remains a legend in the Chelsea fans’ eyes even if his agent and PR team did a horrific job with his non-transfer to NYC FC in the MLS.
