Chelsea FC Transfer Rumours: Loic Remy Priced At £15 Million

Amidst rumours that Crystal Palace are lining up a summer bid to bring Loic Rémy across London, Chelsea FC have slapped a hefty £15 million price tag on the striker.

Rémy joined Chelsea last summer for a fee reportedly around the £10 million mark. Jose Mourinho’s interest in the French striker was borne from selling Romelu Lukaku to Everton, combined with the impressive performances the striker put in for Newcastle United during the previous season.

Having originally joined Queens Park Rangers in January 2013, Rémy was sent on loan to the Geordie club for the 2013/14 campaign where he scored 14 league goals in 26 games. With Mourinho looking for a striker to back up Diego Costa, the Blues splashed the cash on the Frenchman as the only other senior forward on the books was a returning Didier Drogba.

Rémy receive limited playing time last season, as Mourinho opted for a one striker formation. However, injuries and suspensions to Costa meant that he perhaps had more opportunities than he expected. He ended up appearing 19 times in the league for the Blues albeit only starting in six of them. Nevertheless, he chipped in when called upon and scored seven goals.

Despite an overall satisfaction with his contribution to Chelsea’s double-winning efforts, the club knows that they need an even better second striker for next season and with Radamel Falcao’s deal supposedly agreed, Rémy may be forcing his way out.

With interest swirling, The Telegraph reports that Chelsea will not listen to any bids under £15 million as they ‘feel Rémy proved he is still among the best forwards in the Premier League’. While the club are not too wrong in thinking that, it seems a pretty unreasonable demand for a player who would be essentially 3rd choice behind Costa and Falcao.

From Rémy’s perspective, meanwhile, he has too much quality to stew on the bench for potentially even less playing time than he was afforded last season. He proved at Newcastle that as a starting frontman he’ll get you goals and at 28 years of age, he should be in the prime of his career. Sitting in the dugout just seems like a massive waste at this point.

From the club’s perspective, if Chelsea for whatever reason keep Rémy at Stamford Bridge, then they could arguably have one of deepest striker squads in the Premier League. On the other hand, if Rémy goes and Chelsea stick to their guns, then they’ll have an extra £15 million in the bank as well. That’s not too bad either.

Weighing it all up, this appears like a win-win situation for the club. They’ll either have mean striker depth or increased pocket depth. However, for the sake of the player I can’t be the only one calling for Chelsea to lower their demands slightly and allow him to have a proper career somewhere else.

Then again, it is football so it wouldn’t be surprising if the £15 million asking price is matched anyway.
