UPDATE: Courtesy of The Times this morning, we now have a better idea of the deal. The loan fee is thought to be around £4 million, with an option included to make the move permanent for £35 million.

Wages, meanwhile, are believed to be somewhere between £130,000 and £180,000 a week.

It’s official. The most divisive deal among Chelsea FC fans for some time has just been announced. Radamel Falcao will line up in a blue shirt next season after joining the West London club on loan. However, given the astronomical terms of his previous deal with Manchester United, how much are Chelsea forking out for the Colombian?

The statement posted on the club website just this afternoon did not give too much away in terms of the agreement details. It only stated that he’ll be at Stamford Bridge for the entirety of next season.

‘Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce we have agreed terms with Monaco for the season-long loan of Radamel Falcao.’

They then go on to highlight his admittedly illustrious career lisiting all the trophies he has won and describing him as ‘one of South America’s hottest properties’. While that is not quite a lie, the heat has been turned down a notch or two following last season’s calamitous stint with United, something which the Blues press officer managed to gently brush to one side…

‘He joined Manchester United on loan for the campaign, helping Louis van Gaal’s side back into the Champions League.’

Hmmm.

Rather unhelpfully, the British tabloid press seem to have no ‘facts’ or figures regarding the cost of the deal, something which is very unusual for the kings of the rumour mill. It is thought, though, that Falcao has taken a significant pay cut from his €250,000 per week wages agreed upon in his Monaco contract, while any loan fee is minimal (at least compared to United’s).

At this point you just have to trust that Jose Mourinho isn’t stupid enough to dish out cash in a reckless manner, and there is precedent to believe he hasn’t. The boss, especially during his second spell with the club, has been very smart with his moves in the transfer market and it would be out of character if he were to sign off on some ridiculously large deal.
