Chelsea FC are now in the market for a new left-back and Augsburg’s Abdul Baba Rahman seems like José Mourinho’s most wanted transfer target. It appeared that the club would be well covered in that position for some time after bringing in Atlético Madrid’s Filipe Luis last season, but with him now on his way out, a replacement is needed.

The Brazilian full-back was one of the best in Europe two seasons ago and excelled under manager Diego Simeone. Luis was expected to perform at the same level for Mourinho but that never materialized. He impressed when he was on the pitch but his opportunities were few and far in between as he failed to unseat Cesar Azpilicueta from his starting position. Now Luis appears to be headed back to the Vicente Calderón.

Manager Jose Mourinho spoke about the Filipe Luis situation and said that Chelsea would be selling him. Reports suggest that Atletico will be returning much of Chelsea’s initial fee and that Luis has already signed a three-year contract with the Madrid club.

His potential replacement in Abdul Baba Rahman is a talented youngster who seems to fit Chelsea FC’s current transfer policy more than the Brazilian. The Blues have opted almost exclusively to sign young footballers in recent years and surprised many fans by signing the 29-year-old left-back last season.

Abdul, meanwhile, is 21 years old but has already made 100 appearances in his senior career. He has only been in the Bundesliga for one season after making the leap to Germany from Ghana via 2.bundesliga side Greuther Furth in 2012.

The Ghanaian international is one of the more promising young defenders in Europe and his talent has been recognized by clubs around the continent. AS Roma were reportedly in the hunt for his signature but according to The Evening Standard, he has rebuffed them for a chance to sign with Chelsea.

The paper also reports that the only reason this deal has not already been sealed is because Rahman wanted to see what the Blues would do with Luis. Now that he is all but out of the door, this could clear the path for the Ghanaian to make his way to Stamford Bridge.

Rahman is still somewhat of an unknown commodity but if the boss believes that he is good enough then we will have to take him at his word. Adding him would bring more youth to a Chelsea defence that will need to be overhauled in the next few years and Rahman appears to be an excellent place for the Blues to start.

Just waiting on that John Stones deal then, Jose.
