Chelsea FC are not yet done in the transfer market as manager Jose Mourinho outlined precisely what the team needs to do to strengthen. The Portuguese manager said, as quoted in Sky Sports, “We need a left-back, the board knows that and my feeling is that we are going to have one”.

The Blues spent £16 million on Filipe Luis from Atletico Madrid last season in a head-scratching move considering the fullback was already 29 years old. It went against the club’s current transfer policy of not spending big money on players that are close to 30 years old. After a quiet season with Chelsea FC, Luis was sold back to Atletico for the same fee that he was purchased for so it was essentially a season-long loan with a £16m deposit.
We have heard time and time again about how quiet the Blues have been in this summer’s transfer window. The only potential first teamers they have brought in are Radamel Falcao and Asmir Begovic and they are yet to make a big splash in the market.

Still, with some time left before the transfer window closes, Chelsea can still make a marquee signing or two. Reports from earlier this week suggest that the deal for FC Augsburg fullback Abdul Baba Rahman is already done and is just waiting to be confirmed by the club. Rahman would fit an immediate need for the club and as a very young player at just 21 years old he also fits the club’s new policy. He is not quite the experienced campaigner that Filipe Luis is but he could be a member of the club for the next decade or so rather than just a few years.
There is also the very public pursuit of Everton defender John Stones to be considered. Chelsea reportedly had a £30m bid denied for the England man and it is unclear how much higher the club will go to bring Stones to Stamford Bridge. Perhaps the club see him as the natural successor to John Terry as captain of both Chelsea FC and the England national team and in that case £30m is a bargain.
Stones is also just 21 years old and if he lives up to his incredible potential he could be a fixture in the Chelsea backline for a decade or more. With Mourinho’s recent contract extension to 2019, it is clear that he is building a team for the future as well as the present.
As for the more immediate needs, Stones is capable of playing as a fullback and has been deployed as a right-back in the past so he could be brought in as cover for Branislav Ivanovic as well. Jose Mourinho usually gets what he wants so if he has a fullback or two in mind then we can expect them in Chelsea colors sooner rather than later.
